<What is the Tamagawa Clasico>
Since the JFL era in 1997, both clubs have been fierce rivals, pushing each other through intense matches and numerous dramatic developments. Especially in 1999, the first year of J2, Tokyo Gas rebranded as the current FC Tokyo with the aim of entering the J1 League. Both clubs fought hard in the promotion battle and succeeded in being promoted to the J1 League together. Kawasaki Frontale was relegated to J2 after one year but was promoted again in 2005, and the two clubs have since engaged in fierce competition once more.
In this area divided by the Tama River, the history of competing while elevating each other has shown excitement comparable to the 'derbies' held in other cities. Cherishing this history of both sides and aiming to make this rivalry a tradition, the name 'Tamagawa Clasico' was created by combining 'Tamagawa,' the symbol dividing the two clubs, and 'Clasico,' a Spanish word meaning 'traditional match.'
Although the name "Tamagawa Clasico" officially started in 2007, to honor the intense rivalry between FC Tokyo and Kawasaki Frontale, the matches have been counted as "Tamagawa Clasico" starting from the inaugural J2 season in 1999. From 1999 to 2006, there were a total of 10 matches. The project began in 2007, and the first match under this designation was held on May 6, 2007, at Kawasaki Frontale's home game, which was recognized as the "11th Tamagawa Clasico." Both clubs will continue to strive together so that the history can accumulate to 50, 100, 200 matches and beyond.
The current head-to-head record is FC Tokyo 12 wins, 9 draws, 25 losses.
* After discussion between both clubs, only "league matches" will be counted as Tamagawa Clasico (matches in cup competitions and the Emperor's Cup will not be counted).
