Commentary
The Final Round of the 12th Tokyo Club Youth Soccer U-17 Championship, held in 2010, took place amid swirling snow.
The match against the formidable opponent, Verdy Youth, kicked off at 1:20 p.m.
Right after the start of the match, Hashimoto quickly broke through the left side and created a chance.
9 min: From a free kick given in midfield, the opponent connected passes finely and finally unleashed a powerful long-range shot, resulting in a conceded goal.
10 min: Nihei broke through on a through pass from Muramatsu but the ball went out over the goal line.
11 min: Tokyo gradually found their rhythm, connecting passes finely in midfield, and finally Hashimoto took a long-range shot, but it went straight to the goalkeeper.
15 min: When the ball was passed to Iwata, who had drifted from midfield to the right side, he boldly challenged toward the goal with his characteristic dribbling. However, he was blocked and cleared by the opposing defender, but Nihei picked up the ball and took a shot from his specialty dribble. The ball hit the opponent defender’s leg, slightly changing its course, and went straight into the goal, leveling the score.
20 min: Energized by this, Tokyo's Iwata controlled a brilliant through pass from Hashimoto with one touch and immediately took a volley shot, but it was narrowly blocked by the keeper.
After that, they continued to build attacks starting from Hashimoto, but struggled to connect passes as the pitch became slippery due to accumulated snow.
31 minutes: Meanwhile, the lone forward Iwata received the ball on the left side, used his speed to dribble past opponents, and delivered a cross, but no one was able to connect inside.
32 minutes: However, immediately after, when the ball was switched to the right side and a cross was sent inside, Iwata was tripped by an opposing defender inside the penalty area, earning a penalty kick.
Hashimoto calmly converted this penalty kick, taking the lead.
After that, Iwata continued to apply pressure from the front line, preventing the opponent from establishing their rhythm and looking for attacking opportunities.
40 minutes: However, from a free kick awarded in midfield, the ball was crossed into the area, leading to a scramble before being laid back, and a long-range shot was taken. This shot went wide, allowing them to escape the danger.
42 minutes: However, the opponent quickly circulated the ball again, and a costly foul was committed in front of the goal.
From this free kick, the ball kicked by the opponent soared over the wall and seemed about to be sucked into the goal, but goalkeeper Baba made a fine save to avert the danger.
The tense moments continued, and even in first-half stoppage time, a powerful middle-range shot was taken from a free kick awarded on the right side, but this too went over the crossbar, and the first half ended 2-1 as it was.
At the start of the second half, Tokyo made a substitution, bringing in Iwaki for Fukumori.
Just after the start of the second half, the opponent skillfully connected passes in midfield and took a middle-range shot, but it was straight at Baba.
51 minutes: Once again, the opponent connected passes finely and broke through, resulting in a regrettable foul inside the penalty area. A penalty kick was awarded to the opponent.
However, Baba perfectly read this penalty and made a fine save.
Although the opponent continued to circulate passes, making it a difficult period, solid defense was shown centered on center backs Kobayashi and Ishihara.
57 minutes: Saito was brought on to replace Hiyoka.
They tried to regain the momentum in attack, but it was difficult to find a rhythm on the pitch, which had become quite covered with snow.
66': Meanwhile, defender Yoshida received his second yellow card of the day and was sent off.
68': Tokuda was brought on to replace Nihei.
71': With fewer players, Tokyo is trying to create chances by playing balls behind the defense.
Saito broke through behind and passed to Muramatsu, who ran in. He struck it powerfully, but it just missed the target.
76 min: Nozawa is brought on to replace Yamaguchi.
Tokyo, unable to connect passes in midfield, tries to send the ball behind the opponent’s defense but struggles to link up, and instead loses possession and comes under attack in a difficult situation.
84 min: As the match approaches its final stages, a tough period ensues. Once again, the opponent connects passes through midfield and takes a long-range shot. An opposing player gets in the shooting lane, and although keeper Baba seems briefly caught off guard, he manages a super save by keeping his left foot planted and clearing the ball.
Immediately after that, Iwaki protected the goal with a body block against a shot from the opponent’s cross.
87th minute: Yuasa was brought on to replace Saito, who was desperately chasing the ball up front.
Although they continued to be attacked until the very end, the 10 players on the pitch and the bench members united to hold the defense, and the final whistle blew.
We defeated our must-win opponent Verdy and claimed the championship.
