INTERVIEW 2026.3.30

Quiet Fighting Spirit

A two-game series against FC Machida Zelvia that we absolutely cannot afford to lose. Teruhito NAKAGAWA, quietly sharpening his skills within limited playing time, spoke about his resolve and determination.

The consecutive matches against FC Machida Zelvia on April 1 and April 5. Last season, there was also a series of league matches and Emperor's Cup games toward the end, and the frustration of not making it to the Emperor's Cup Final Round still wells up inside. This time, the tournament regulations are different, and there is even a possibility that the outcome could be decided by a penalty shootout.

However, one thing is clear: in order for us to be among the top teams and seriously aim for the league championship, we absolutely must win this consecutive match series. We have to show an attitude of going for the win in both games. It is no exaggeration to say that everything depends on this series.

The fact that Machida has been consistently achieving good results since their promotion to the J1 League is proof of their solid strength. Their style is clear and thoroughly executed, making them by no means an easy opponent.

I believe the key factor that will decide the outcome of this consecutive match series is the 'intensity and fierceness in one-on-one duels.' Whether we can hold our ground there and gain control of the ball is crucial. Also, since the opponent is a team that scores many goals from crosses, we must be fully alert to that. However, on the flip side, we also have opportunities to score from crosses. This battle will be one of the major factors determining the match.

Based on the matches so far, I believe the team needs to demonstrate 'flexibility' and 'challenge' according to the situation.

For example, in the recent match against Mito Hollyhock, there were many moments when we felt unsettled by the opponent’s pressing. Factors like the wind also played a part, but the question was whether to carefully connect passes to break down the opponent or to use long balls to advance. Relying solely on one approach would obviously allow the opponent to read us and make managing the game difficult. From here on, the ability to switch between these approaches and maintain balance will be important. Personally, I want to challenge myself to connect the ball more securely.

In every match, many good aspects have emerged. We must continue to maintain those while further improving the quality of our decision-making on the pitch.

Focusing on myself, the only match I have started in the starting lineup was the game against JEF United Ichihara Chiba.

Of course, I have a strong desire to play more on the pitch and contribute to the team's victory by increasing my playing time. However, on the other hand, this season the depth of players in each position is strong, and the competition is fierce. I feel that even with limited playing time, I have been able to create opportunities, and in the match against Chiba where I started, I believe I was able to show my abilities to some extent. That is why, when given limited chances and when I am on the pitch, I must firmly prove my abilities. The most important thing for me right now is how I can turn those chances into goals.

The match venue, Nozuta (Machida GION Stadium), will be the first stadium we visit as Tokyo. There is a somewhat unpleasant image of going there as the visiting team. (I was with Machida in the 2016 season)

However, I absolutely want to defeat Machida, who is currently one rank above us. Above all, my sole desire is to score a goal and win against Machida.

We have earned this position (ranking) ourselves, and I firmly believe there is definitely a chance to win the league. Whether we make the most of this opportunity or let it slip away is now entirely up to us.

By winning two consecutive matches here, we aim to get even closer to the top-ranked Kashima Antlers. We must be fully aware of our position and unite as a team to seize this chance firmly in our hands.

Playing consecutive matches against the same opponent is difficult, but I personally want to be a force that ensures the team wins the championship and a power that secures victory in the back-to-back matches against Machida.
