INTERVIEW 2022.2.24

Interview with Ryoma WATANABE

Q: How was it to look back on the whole after finishing the opening game?
A: I think everyone had the impression that the beginning was a bit chaotic, but for me, it was within expectations. Honestly, there is no part that requires reflection on that. After the period when things didn’t go well, we gradually started playing our style of soccer and were able to connect the first half to the second half, so overall, I don’t think there was anything to be pessimistic about in the match.

Q, Did you feel that it was necessary to endure the first 15 minutes not going well as expected?
A: At first, I absolutely thought it wouldn't go well. From my experience, when trying a new style of soccer, it's normal for the initial period of the first match not to go smoothly. Since we are doing something new this season, I believe it is natural that things don't go well at first.

Q: In communicating within the team, which aspect, offense or defense, was the focus of improvement?
A: I focused more on the defensive side. Since our defense wasn't going very well, I was consciously working on correcting that.

Q: It seemed like the rhythm improved from the time when the ball was passed around in the backline. Did you feel a sense of accomplishment in that aspect?
A, As for whether it was the tempo and speed we aim for... whether we managed to create a rhythm... the quality we truly want to achieve is much higher, but judging from the current point, I think we were able to do it smoothly.

Q, I think I have gained a sense of confidence in playing as a side back even in practice matches.
A: Since the opponent was Kawasaki Frontale, there are still areas where we need to improve, but I think there are a few things I need to confirm within myself a bit more. During the match, there were times when I was suddenly deployed as a side back due to accidents or other circumstances, but I believe this was the first time I started the match playing as a side back from the beginning. I felt that I wasn’t doing well and that I was placing a defensive burden on those around me. I hope to continue practicing and growing in that area moving forward.

Q: How do you feel about the offensive part?
A: Unlike defense, I believe that if I cannot contribute to the attack, there is no point in me being on the pitch, so I think I have to do that.

Q, I think we will move forward with a good feeling and want to express our own football while achieving results.
A, Fundamentally, I believe the style of football Tokyo has chosen is aimed at achieving results. The idea that it’s okay because things are going well even though the results didn’t come is over with this (opening match). From now on, it’s necessary not only to play good football but also to focus on winning. Even if we play good football, losing is meaningless, so we must prioritize winning first and foremost, while not forgetting to express our own style to achieve that.
