INTERVIEW 2022.2.08

Interview with Yuto Nagatomo

Q: Since the start date, it was the second day of practice participation for the new team. How was the practice after returning to Tokyo after a long time?
A: On the start day, we didn't do much practice. Today, there was a lot of intensity and sharpness, such as the fierceness in one-on-one situations and the quick transitions between offense and defense. We were able to practice thoroughly, so it was really enjoyable. It was a practice session where I could positively feel that the team is changing.

Q: Do you think the concept of football has changed from last season? Did you feel any signs of it during practice?
A: It's not just about connecting well and maintaining possession of the ball, but also about having the driving force to move forward and constantly being aware of aiming for the goal. The coach has really helped foster this mindset, so I find it very rewarding.

Q: You were absent from the Okinawa camp for activities as a representative of Japan. Do you feel any differences in tactical understanding compared to the other players around you?
A: I was away for nearly a month, so it is true that I am behind in understanding the coach’s tactics and applying them on the pitch due to the delayed integration. As we approach the season opener, I just need to work hard every day in practice to catch up quickly.

Q, you can't waste a day of practice, can you?
A: Not only during practice but also in meetings, I can internalize the tactics intended by the coach, and there are many things I can do both on and off the pitch, so I want to work on that thoroughly.

Q, with less than 2 weeks until the opening, the atmosphere is finally becoming one of anticipation for the start. Have your feelings changed since returning from the activities of the Japanese national team?
A: In terms of mindset, I have always switched back and forth between the Japan national team and my club. The Japan national team is the Japan national team, and Tokyo is Tokyo, so I am determined to clearly separate the two and start fresh mentally as well.

Q: What does Nagatomo want to embody in a team that is constantly changing?
A, it is naturally necessary to understand the coach's tactics, and it is also important to express them through play. However, at the same time, in terms of bringing out my own characteristics and being active for the team, I have to appeal as an individual or I won't be able to play in matches. I want to make sure I can clearly demonstrate my own traits within the team's tactics.
